How to Reduce Electricity Bill from Your Air Conditioner in Pakistan

When you buy an air conditioner, one of your biggest worries is how much it will increase your monthly electricity  bill.  Per unit electricity bill is also on the peak. As a resident of Lahore, one of the hottest places in Pakistan, I completely understand this concern. Luckily, there are simple steps and tricks you can use to reduce Ac’s Electricity Bill without compromising on comfort.

Avoid Direct Sunlight and Insulate the Room

Ensure your AC outdoor unit is not exposed to direct sunlight for long periods. Also, make sure the room where the AC is installed has fewer windows and doors to prevent sunlight from entering and heating the room. This reduces the performance load on your AC, enhancing its efficiency.

Always keep windows and doors shut while the AC is on. If warm air from outside enters the room, the AC has to work harder to maintain the cool temperature, increasing your energy bills.

Set the Right Temperature on Your Thermostat

During the summer, temperatures can soar up to 40°C. Setting your thermostat below 18°C puts excessive load on your AC. Generally, a temperature between 20-25°C is comfortable and cool. Setting the thermostat within this range prevents the AC from overworking, saving energy and reducing bills.

Use Sleep Timers and Fans

Using your AC all night can lead to high electricity bills. Instead, use the sleep function to set the AC to turn off after an hour or two. The room will remain cool enough for a comfortable sleep. You can also set a timer and use a fan to circulate the cool air after the AC turns off. Modern ACs often have an auto-restart function, allowing them to turn on at specific intervals, further saving energy.

Keep Your AC Well-Maintained

Regular maintenance ensures your AC performs optimally. A dirty air filter can increase energy use, reduce cooling efficiency, and lower airflow quality. Clean your AC filters at least once a month and schedule servicing once or twice a year, especially before summer, to maintain energy efficiency.

Clean and Replace AC Filters

AC filters keep the indoor air clean and pure. A dirty filter can reduce AC efficiency by at least 15%, increasing your bills. Check and replace the AC filter every six months to keep your AC in top condition. Replacement filters are affordable, typically costing around 1000 to 1,500 BDT.

Seal the Air Leaks

ACs work best in closed-off rooms. Open rooms let cool air escape, making it harder to cool the space. Temperature always flow from lower to high so check for and seal any leaks in windows and doors. A well-sealed room cools down faster, reducing the active time needed for the AC, thus saving energy and lowering Ac’s Electricity Bill.

Final Thoughts

By following these simple steps, you can enjoy the comfort of your air conditioner without worrying about high electricity bills. Stay cool and save energy!
